The proposed Killingly Energy Center fossil fuel power generating plant would create many different types of pollution. I’m going to dive into just a few of them now but, I will add more as time goes on.
The amount toxic emissions that this plant would generate is mind boggling. Let’s look at just one element of the air pollution that will be created: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – Carbon Dioxide is the main pollutant that is making our atmosphere toxic. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2014 CO2 was 81% of all GHG (Greenhouse Gases) pollution in the United States. The amount of CO2e (Carbon dioxide and equivalent Greenhouse Gases) that would be produced by Killingly Energy Center is astonishing. According to NTE Energy’s own projections in one day it can produce 10.9 MILLION pounds of Green House Gases. To go further in one year this would equate to 39.9 BILLION pounds of (GHG). These figures which have been supplied by NTE do not include the negative impact that clearing the trees from over 25 acres of land will create. Greenhouse gases are only one part of this pollution nightmare.
A 2013 assessment by WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that outdoor air pollution is carcinogenic to humans, with the particulate matter component of air pollution most closely associated with increased cancer incidence, especially cancer of the lung. An association also has been observed between outdoor air pollution and increase in cancer of the urinary tract/bladder.
Ambient (outdoor air pollution) in both cities and rural areas was estimated to cause 3.7 million premature deaths worldwide per year in 2012; this mortality is due to exposure to small particulate matter of 10 microns or less in diameter (PM10), which cause cardiovascular and respiratory disease, and cancers. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) have been deemed unsafe and carcinogenic(cancer causing) in any amount by the World Health Organization. NTE has stated that they could produce 96,600 lbs. of VOCs. NTE has stated that this plant will exceed local emission regulation limits. One very disturbing part is that power plants such as the one proposed are allowed to purchase Emission Reduction Credits (ERC)s. What this means is that they can purchase the right to pollute our air from another company that has reduced its pollution output. The kicker is the company they buy the ERCs from does not even have to be in Connecticut. So they can pollute our town and state and some other town(s) / state get to benefit from this. In my opinion that is ridiculous!! All of this is astonishing given the fact that NTE Energy claims that this is clean energy. Watch for more information that will be coming soon.
